"Americans have long been fascinated by the personal lives of Hollywood celebrities and the over-hyped magic of plastic surgery. In this entertaining memoir, Dr. Norman Leaf, a highly respected plastic surgeon, reveals the complex and all-too-human connection that exists between these two worlds.

In his thirty-five years practicing in Beverly Hills, California, Leaf has encountered the great and those aspiring to be great, seeing them in a different light than the general public. This unique perspective contributes to a touching, inspiring, humorous, and eye-opening journey into a world few have the opportunity to see close-up, while debunking the myths and clearing up the misconceptions about plastic surgery. Are Those Real? is not a kiss-and-tell memoir. With the exception of a few iconic figures, Leaf is careful to protect the identities of his patients.

Sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, Are Those Real? paints an intimate portrait of a master surgeon, while shining a light into a little-known corner of modern culture. In this memoir, Leaf appeals to biography buffs and illustrates the good, bad, happy, and just plain funny aspects of plastic surgery."

Are Those Real? eBook Norman Leaf MD

In his book Are Those Real? highly regarded Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Norman Leaf details surgical techniques as easily as one describes a recipe, using understandable technology. Unabashed tales of his youthful musical adventures and medical training shift from humorous to serious and back. In recounting true stories of patients' both reasonable and irrational requests and demands for plastic surgery, he explains why he accommodated some and refused others.

While carefully concealing the identity of his patients, Dr. Leaf brings them to life in vignettes that range from entertaining to pathetic. Yet the book is filled with surprises, such as the attractive Italian "woman of a certain age" who asked for surgery to make her look younger in an effort to win back her husband from his mistress. Though concerned that it would not help her Dr. Leaf fulfilled her request. Surprisingly it worked and she is undyingly grateful to her rescuer.

The board certified plastic surgeon admits to his naiveté in tales such as in the tale of twins who stated their desire for breast augmentation in order to perform in a Las Vegas review. When they fled without paying for their surgery Dr. Leaf found they were unknown to the Las Vegas show, at which time his lawyer suggested that he "repossess their tits."

Dr. Leaf is good-natured about the fact that patients who hang on his every word in his office sometimes pretend not to know him in public, fearful that onlookers may suspect a professional relationship with him. He tells us where the scars from plastic surgery are located, which may result in viewing our friends and associates from new and peculiar angles.

Knowing that most patients do not want anyone to know they have had plastic surgery, Dr. Leaf has arranged to operate in his office, as many plastic surgeons do, and may work on Sunday or during the night for celebrities stalked by the paparazzi. He also has attended patients in their mansions, with handmaidens and security standing by. Such encounters are ripe for entertaining stories and the good doctor does not deny us the details.

What the reader learns from this book is that no matter how beautiful, rich and admired, people are human, especially in the doctor's office. They may be divas on the set or stage but with the plastic surgeon they become like schoolchildren. And Dr. Leaf treats each one with the respect and understanding he believes they deserve.

In addition to his credits as an educator and university clinical professor, Dr. Leaf volunteered to serve as medical director of Iraq Star, an organization formed to provide reconstructive and aesthetic surgical support for veterans.

Are Those Real? eBook Norman Leaf MD Reviews

My wife and I have always wondered how celebrity's use and misuse plastic surgery, and Norman Leaf spells out the process in a series of amusing, well-written and informative anecdotes. (Only in Hollywoodland are post-operative bandages badges of honor.)
On a more somber note, Dr. Leaf helps American military personnel who were disfigured in Iraq and Afghanistan. We also enjoyed learning how and why Leaf became a plastic surgeon and how one aspect of plastic surgery works first they tighten the underlying tissue and then the skin.
Buy this book and learn much more, all told in a highly readable, brisk style. It's obvious that this accomplished surgeon takes his work, but not himself, very seriously.

Well..I guess the first reviews would come from the people who know and admire this man..so here I am! Having worked by his side day in, day out, off and on, for pretty much 17 years now..(really? wow! ..but who's counting anymore..) this was a much anticipated and hard won work from Dr.Leaf. He is as he writes; honest, hard-working, classy, well-dressed, and a true gentleman among some aptly described wolves... (not by him, by me!) Over my years as a Surgical Assistant to some of the most well- known Plastic Surgeons in Beverly Hills, he has always been known in the community and by me, to be one of, if not "THE" top surgeons for what we do, which is Plastic and Reconstructive surgery. He has always treated his patients, staff, and his close-knit family with the utmost respect and loyalty. As a writer, this book shows him to have the unusual writing skill of being able to write to the general public as if he were talking directly to you and in the same room! A very rare ability indeed! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, even through the fact that I have heard most of the stories through hours of surgical banter, and also know or know of the patients he writes about, which he has understandably changed the names to protect the innocent! It is an easy read, with true, sometimes sad, sometimes funny, but always heart-felt stories of this crazy, but certainly to some, helpful world he has created here in good ol' Beverly Hills. Get it, read it, and if you personally were thinking of having some work done in the future, you would be hard pressed to find any surgeon who will "fix what ain't broke" better than Dr. Norman Leaf!
